Because, if we’re being honest, the Corolla will get the job done 99% of the time.

Before you get the pitchforks out I’m kinda joking. But I’m kinda not. A few months back I grabbed a Corolla from Turo and took it to Northern Ontario and was pleasantly surprised with the whole experience. It had snow tires and handled just fine. Returned around 40 MPG. Fairly comfortable seats and an overall decent interior with nice-ish materials on all touch surfaces. Sound system was a major letdown, however.

Anyways, it made me think about how good econoboxes are becoming yet many enthusiasts instantly discount them (I’m also aware that enough enthusiasts do in fact keep a cheaper car). I don’t think I’d own a Corolla as my only vehicle... but if I had a big commute I wouldn’t hesitate to get one for that purpose.

I wrote a short post about this on my blog, focusing on the fallacy of “logical” car purchases. Very rarely can you be entirely logical and unbiased because, especially for anyone on Oppo, a car purchase is an emotional decision. If they weren’t then 99% of us would be in Corollas. I tried copy-pasting the content to here but today Kinja is not being compliant at all, so if you wanna read please click the link. No ads. No like/subscribe/sacrifice your firstborn links either.

I will agree, econoboxes have gotten incredibly good. If i wouldn't have gotten 6k off msrp on my FOST I think a honda fit would have served me fine. Trying to get my gf into something like that or a kia soul. But to amend your claim: not a sedan. Sedans are dumb. Hatchback all the way.

On the used market, there are a lot of things that are better than a Corolla because they command a hefty premium. New, they are great.

The hatch would probably work really well for me. Should be able to accommodate my son’s goalie gear, and I imagine it’s probably somewhat more enjoyable to drive than an SUV. I guess I’ll go edit my post about keeping the 4Runner forever...

Have you ever tried to buy a used Toyota or Honda? My once minty Cruze with 100k miles cost about the same as 200k and 5 year older comparable cars and I have bluetooth to boot. The trick is to buy the most overlooked car in the segment.

That’s the same reason why you can get a much nicer and much newer Tundra than a Tacoma at the same price. Not that Tundras are cheap but they aren’t Tacos.

I’m honestly pretty interested in that new turbo3 version coming. The last Corolla I drove was an early 90's sedan, (like 93/94ish.) It was too small, head was against the ceiling, and really inadequately powered for the automatic trans.... But the newer ones look really nice.

It’s not a sporty ride but because it’s very light, the Corolla actually feels kinda flingable. I had a few spirited driving moments on my trip. With some decent tires I imagine it’d be fun to take around an auto-X course.

I will agree that in general econoboxes have become very good. They are also some of the only vehicles still available with 3 pedals. My particular “ dirty secret” car is the honda fit.

However I have to disagree on the corolla in partcular. I think the one I drove from CT to PA I wanna say in 2014ish the car was new and it was one of the least pleasant things I have ever driven. Seating position and suspension made it feel like I was sitting on top of the car and it felt like we were going into triple digits breaching 65mph.

I’ve only tried buying “smart” once, and it was a disaster. I set emotion aside and bought a brand new 2013 jetta s with 3 pedals to commute to a new job . I put 18k miles on it in 10 months, booted in the passenger door in anger one night. I quit that job and traded it in for a almost a 5k loss on a 2008 M3, haha.

I’ve had an ‘05 XRS since 2009, It’s always been good. I don’t put much milage on it (especially now I have the moto) and it’s a little worse for wear atheistically  (eventually sort that out)  but it has no problem winding out. It’s not really quick and doesn’t get great fuel economy but it’s got heart.

Doesn’t hurt to use a bit of logic, at least in an attempt to remove ignorance. I suggested the Infiniti Q50 to s omeone looking for a luxury sedan recently and received a staunch “no, don’t like Nissan” in return. Why? Who knows. But it’s single-track thinking like that which cuts off potentially good cars from someone.

To a lesser degree but you simply cannot buy a well maintained Japanese car for even close to the same price as their competitors in the same condition. Try searching for the cheapest sub 100k mile Corolla near you that doesn't have a salvage title. It's probably close to 8 grand.

It is more capable of carrying people and cargo than the Corolla at the cost of reduced fuel economy. It is the ultimate utility vehicle for most purposes on pavement. Uncool and soulless, perhaps, but good lord is it a far more efficient and comfortable tool than a 3-row SUV/CUV.

The poor car wasn’t really at fault in my situation, but the combination of buying a car I didn’t really want to drive to a job I grew to HATE made me swear off that sort of car buying forever.

Full disclosure t hat E90 M3 was somewhat cursed as well, but it was SUPER fun. I only had it 18 months. The extended warranty was about to expire and it had given me plenty of reasons to get rid of it during that time. So I traded it on a new Audi S3 which I sold after 3.5 years of really liking but not loving it.

There’s a lot to discuss. The brown leatherette interior in the TRDs looks a lot better than the more durable gray cloth interior the rest got, but there is not much left of the seats. One interesting detail: the flasher button is only red in the gray interior models.

Sequoias of this generation are great too, and have absolutely cavernous interiors. It still holds a personal record of most comfortable non van to cram 7 people in.

The leatherette once melted enough in the heat to permanently stick to an original iPod left  inside. A layer of it came up with the iPod. Not very durable but the color scheme was worth it. I've got an uncle with a lower spec work truck and the cloth still looks great while my dad's TRD doesn't have much left of the upholstery. But hey, brown looks better.

He won’t get any argument out of me. My shitbox Corolla runs like a champ. I have the money to buy darn near any car on the road, but I choose this. It doesn’t handle particularly well. The shifter is spongy and imprecise. The brakes and acceleration are meh. Still, you know what? It’s so much better than the cars I grew up with. I came into adulthood during the malaise era, and those cars were terrible. The Corolla is downright quick compared to them.

I was driving on the interstate yesterday and found myself passing cars and discovered I was doing 90 and the car was stable and controlled even at that speed.  It was also a bit fun.  Ok, I know if I went and bought a real sports car that it would run rings around this one, but until I do trade up, I’m pretty happy with this.

Most manufacturers in the EU market have been doing that for ages. Well, excluding the hybrid part. 3-door hatch or coupe, 5-door hatch, maybe a sedan and/or convertible, FWD or AWD, manual or automatic, gasoline or diesel. All with the same nameplate. This is true for the Golf, the Focus, the Mégane, the Astra, and on and on.

I’ll give you safety features for sure because 2020 safety tech has come a long way if we’re talking about a brand new car. Creature comforts I will say an E34 is absolutely better at aside from lack of carplay and bluetooth which is easily remedied if you’re someone that cares about that kind of stuff. Corollas feel great when you only drive them a little bit, but I’ve found that they have no lumbar support, little bolstering and make my back hurt after a while. My brother had an 08 and I had a 98 and both were the same way with the back pain , felt good on a quick jaunt until you settled into the car more.

In terms of repairability and longevity I will absolutely disagree as you can maintain an E34 in your driveway easily as opposed to a 2020 Corolla which 20 years down the line (which is what matters in this argument, as we’re discussing longevity) will need all sorts of specialized tools to reset things or replace parts over time.

In a vacuum where everyone had to purchase new cars youre point about everyone smart buying corollas would be true. However, looking at my situation I would have to finance any new or certified corolla and would instantly have a large payment. As a younger guy, it is much more reasonable to save up a few grand and buy any number of reasonable used cars that will be comfier and better overall even if it may lack some new tech features. Always better to have a paid off car that you can sell if you ever need and its much more affordable. And if you say well ihm96 what about an old used corolla then all those tech and safety advantages go out the window as I’d much rather pay 3-5k for a nice old E34 or W124 than the same amount for a Corolla from the early 2000s or late 90s as they ride way nicer, offer similar mileage, and are just much comfier and nicer overall.

For instance, if you hop into a new Corolla it may have more things you define as creature comforts than say a 1980 450SEL Benz, but in terms of ride quality and feel and the niceness of the materials that all outweighs the small stuff like blind spot monitoring or carplay to your physical body. Take a 2 hour ride in a 90s E Class or 5 series and seriously tell me you think a corolla is comfier.

TL;DR If you buy a new one you have to finance and at that point Ill save my money and have a comfier riding car with less tech features (and keep in mind an E34 has airbags, ABS, etc) because as a young guy why should I finance and go into debt when the economy is crashing. And if you say buy an old one well then I’ll just buy something old and nicer for the same price

Did you ask why they don’t like Nissan? Maybe they have good reasons why they think that

Hmm, I like the cut of your jib but I see your C orolla and raise you the Ioniq.

Liftback/Hatchback so more versatile , hybrid (nearly 60 mpg in eco trim) and about the same price as a Corolla. It’s a Hyundai so it’s nearly as reliable as a Toyota too.

The toyota tax is real. My buddy wanted a Prius, found him an Ioniq 3 years newer and 20k less miles for less money than the Prii he was looking at.

Absolutely crazy how much of a premium the brands have where people think they don't have to worry have over the lesser known competitors.

You mentioned you’ve had experience with an ‘08 Corolla - that’s 3 generations old by this point. Newer ones are very different and, in general, economy cars are no longer the prison sentences they were before. Seeing as how you haven’t been in a current gen Corolla and I haven’t been in a 1980 450SEL Benz neither of us can say what’s better. Someone who probably has some more authority on the subject The StraightP ipes guys on YouTube . They reviewed a 2020 Altima and kept raving about the seats - have a watch:

The point I’m making is that, while a new Corolla is by no means the epitome of luxury, someone looking for a decent, reliable, and new car won’t go wrong with one of these. That leaves more E34s for you anyways.

I haven’t been in one but it’s probably a good (better?) option, too! I just ended up with a Corolla because that’s what was available on Turo. There is a hybrid Corolla available now as well so I wonder how that stacks up to the Ioniq.

I have actually been in several corollas and Camry’s from the last 10 years, probably the most recent being a 2017. I have a lot of experience with various modern cars despite not owning any because I worked as a porter (Often transporting cars up to 100 miles or more, enough to get a good feel) and now as a product specialist at a Benz dealer.

I agree that anyone looking for a new car can’t go wrong with one, but I also think that if you want a more engaging experience it doesn’t mean you aren’t being smart. You could even get a nice day 320i if you really want to be economical and get great gas mileage plus easy maintenance and a stick that’s also comfier and has better driving dynamics (for an enthusiast at least) and is comfier.

I’m happy to have more E34s to myself haha, it’s amazing that you can get a very nice one for way less than a ratty E30 given how prices have gone. :-)

For sure - a fun car can put a smile on your face and if that’s the difference between you being in a good or bad mood when you get to work, by all means get the more engaging daily driver. For this reason my daily (before the lockdown) was my road bike. I love cycling and it’s the best way for me to get to work.

And despite the praise I’m giving to the car, my rental Corolla had an absolutely horrid sound system that I would not be able to live with if I had to drive it everyday.

Yeah the sound systems and deadening aren’t great. Take it up to 100 and it sounds loud as hell inside

Hybrid corolla is a bit cheaper ($500-$1000 MSRP), but no hatch, 20 less hp and slightly lower MPG
